Changelog
What's new
Hedgehog Chef updates itself: the installed app picks up a new version the next time you open it, never in the middle of cooking.
-
Coena is now Hedgehog Chef
Same kitchen, same recipes, same login: a new name and a new address, app.hedgehogchef.com.
- Hedgehog Chef, or Hedgehog for short. The app lives at app.hedgehogchef.com and the site at hedgehogchef.com.
- Your recipes, plans, lists and household are unchanged. Sign in once on the new address.
- Claude connections, iOS Shortcuts, the bookmarklet, calendar subscriptions and save-by-email addresses keep working.
-
Meatless Fridays, store search and better cost estimates
Keep meat off Fridays, search your list at your own stores, and see what recipes really cost.
- Meatless Fridays in Settings › Household & diet: every Friday or only in Lent, plus Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fish is fine.
- The meal plan points out a dish with meat on one of those days.
- The planner keeps meat off them when it plans your week.
- Search stores: every item on your list with a button for each of your stores (Sam's Club, Walmart, Aldi, Dillons and more) that opens the store's own search, to compare prices and add to your cart there.
- Cost estimates for nearly every ingredient, at your state's price level, where no store has a price. Pick your state in Settings › Stores.
-
Cook a meal, a pantry that watches out, and a tour
Cooking several dishes is one flow now, and Coena tells you before the basics run out.
- Cook a meal: pick your dishes in a tap and follow every step of every dish in one list, timed so everything is ready together.
- Running low: give a staple a “buy more at” point and Coena tells you when cooking, or this week's plan, gets it there.
- The planner counts what you'd buy (“what 8 things can I buy for 7 dinners?”), checks fiber and calories a day, and follows your Max protein or Max fiber setting.
- Import from sites that block importers, like Allrecipes: the Save to Coena bookmarklet sends the page you're looking at.
- A welcome tour, cuisines and appearance in setup, and tips for things you haven't tried yet.
-
Coena 2: the planner
Coena becomes a product anyone can use, with an AI planner at the center.
- The AI planner: ask for a week of dinners, a budget or a way to use up the spinach, and approve the plan and list it proposes.
- My stores: pick the grocery stores you shop at and see prices per item, per store and for the week.
- Reminders and notifications: thaw the night before, start cooking, shopping day, use it up — in the app, as push notifications and by email.
- Import from more apps: Mela, Crouton, Recipe Keeper, MasterCook, Plan to Eat, Mealie, Tandoor, Cooklang and more.
- Import from YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Pinterest links: the recipe in the description or caption, or the page it links to.
- Open sign-up: anyone can create a kitchen; invites still bring people into yours.
- Turn off AI: one switch in Settings hides the planner and every AI feature, for you only. Everything else keeps working.
- Cook a meal: cook several recipes at once and Coena tells you what to do next, so everything is ready together. Split screen on tablets, a second phone can help.
- My kitchen: a pegboard of your tools and appliances. Recipes show what they need and warn when your slow cooker is too small.
- Email recipes to your own private Coena address.
- Your own prices: note what you paid, or snap a receipt, and see “your last price” on the list — for any store, even ones with no price feed. The plan shows planned vs. spent.
- Nutrition from ingredients, using USDA data: a nutrition label for any recipe, daily goals and day totals on the plan.
- Works offline: the shopping list, this week's plan and your recipes open without a signal, and items you check off sync when you're back.
- Calendar feed for Google or Apple Calendar, Siri Shortcuts (What's for dinner?, add to the list), reusable menus, leftovers that scale the original, and a kitchen display for a wall tablet.
- Export everything — Paprika format, web pages, Markdown or JSON — always free. Plus weekly backups by email, version history with restore, and finding and merging duplicates.
- Nested binders, advanced search with include and exclude, and saved searches as smart binders.
- Print layouts (full page, two columns, index cards), bigger text, bold, italic and links in steps, recipes that link to each other, and sending a recipe as a file.
- Scan recipes of up to six pages, or fill one in by hand from pasted text — no AI needed.
- Shopping: move or copy items between lists, search the list, keep an item exactly as typed, and barcode scanning. The pantry check now counts amounts and expiry dates.
- Import reports and a check that flags a recipe that came in incomplete; What's new and a way to message us in Settings › Help.
- A new home at app.hedgehogchef.com, and a website at hedgehogchef.com. Old links redirect.
-
Faster with big libraries, safer connections
A review round across the app before opening it up.
- Libraries of thousands of recipes scroll smoothly; Today, the planner and the shopping side panel load only the recipes they show.
- Claude can only connect through Claude's own sign-in callbacks, and Coena's sign-in endpoints are rate limited.
- Longer invite codes, and resetting a member's password also signs out their API tokens and Claude connections.
- Paprika imports show which recipes you already have before importing.
- App updates install in the background and switch over when you're not cooking or editing.
