Compare · Crouton alternative
Hedgehog Chef vs. Crouton: an honest comparison.
Crouton has kept people's recipes on Apple devices since 2019: it saves them from websites, cookbook photos and PDFs, plans the week, and has a step-by-step cooking mode you can move through hands-free, on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Vision Pro. If someone at home uses Android or Windows, or you'd like the app to plan the week and keep a pantry, here's how the two compare, including where Crouton is the better choice.
Compared using Crouton's own website, press kit and privacy policy, and its App Store listing and version history. Last checked November 2, 2026.
Hedgehog Chef is the better fit if you want…
- It works on Android, Windows, Chromebooks and in any browser, so everyone at home can use it, whatever phone they have.
- An AI planner that turns a request into a week of meals and a shopping list, from your own recipes.
- A pantry with expiry dates and “What can I make?”, so the list skips what you already have.
- Nutrition calculated from the ingredients, with daily goals on the plan.
- On Family, two people each with their own login, sharing recipes, the plan and a list that updates instantly.
- Your Crouton recipes come along: it imports Crouton's export, photos, tags and notes included.
Crouton is the better fit if…
- Everyone at home is on Apple: it runs on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Vision Pro, and syncs and shares through iCloud.
- You cook hands-free a lot: point your thumb left or right to move between steps, with timers it finds in the steps and a heads-up display that keeps them in view.
- You'd like to cook with someone far away: SharePlay keeps a step-by-step session in sync over FaceTime.
- You want to spend less: it's free to download, Crouton Plus is $24.99, and Discover is $1.99 a month or $14.99 a year.
- You'd rather your recipes stay in your own iCloud: its privacy policy says what you add is stored there and Crouton doesn't have access to it.
- You like kitchen gadgets: it guides you through weighing on Bluetooth scales such as Acaia's, and shows live readings from a Combustion thermometer.
- You want an app from the App Store today: Hedgehog Chef's phone apps aren't out yet, so it installs from the browser.
Why Crouton users switch
What Hedgehog Chef does better than Crouton
Any device, not just Apple's
Crouton runs on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Vision Pro, and shares recipes and the meal plan through iCloud. Hedgehog Chef runs in any browser and installs on iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows and Chromebook, so the person with an Android phone or a Windows laptop cooks from the same kitchen, and on the Family plan each of you signs in as yourself.
A week planned from a request
Crouton can fill a meal plan for you, picking recipes at random from a folder of yours. In Hedgehog Chef, ask the AI planner for “five quick dinners using the chicken in the freezer” and it proposes a week from your own recipes and pantry, with a shopping list and what it costs, for you to approve.
A list and a pantry that know your kitchen
Crouton builds a grocery list from your recipes and works with Apple Reminders. Hedgehog Chef's list sorts itself by aisle, merges amounts and skips what's already in the pantry, and the pantry keeps expiry dates and ranks recipes by what you can make tonight. Nutrition is worked out from the ingredients with USDA data, with day totals against your goals on the plan.
Bring your Crouton library
Export your recipes from Crouton and import the file in Hedgehog Chef: ingredients and steps keep their sections, and servings, times, the source, notes, nutrition, tags and photos come along. Recipes you already have are skipped, and Crouton isn't changed, so you can use both while you decide.

Questions
Crouton vs. Hedgehog Chef: common questions
Is Crouton available on Android or Windows?
We couldn't find a version: Crouton's website and App Store listing name iOS, iPadOS, macOS, visionOS and watchOS only, and we couldn't find a web app. Hedgehog Chef runs in any browser and installs on Android, Windows and Chromebooks as well as iPhone, iPad and Mac.
Is Crouton free?
It's free to download, with in-app purchases: Crouton Plus is $24.99, and Discover is $1.99 a month or $14.99 a year. Crouton's website and App Store listing don't spell out what the free version or each purchase includes; its release notes say ingredient substitutions need Discover.
Can I move my recipes from Crouton?
Yes. Export your recipes from Crouton (Settings › Export Recipes makes a .zip of .crumb files), then open Hedgehog Chef, go to Recipes › Import › Other apps and choose the file. Ingredients and steps keep their sections, and servings, times, the source, notes, nutrition, tags and photos come along; recipes you already have are skipped. Crouton isn't changed.
Can I use Crouton and Hedgehog Chef at the same time?
Yes. Importing a Crouton export doesn't change anything in Crouton, so you can keep cooking from it while you try Hedgehog Chef. The two don't sync with each other, so a recipe you save later goes in one or the other unless you save it twice.
Does Crouton have AI meal planning?
Crouton can fill a meal plan automatically, picking recipes at random from a folder, and uses AI to import recipes from photos and text. We couldn't find a plan made from a request. Hedgehog Chef's AI planner proposes a week of meals and a shopping list from a plain request, for you to approve.
Does Hedgehog Chef have a hands-free cook mode like Crouton's?
Yes, in its own way. Hedgehog Chef's cook mode reads steps aloud and takes voice commands (“next”, “start timer”) in Chrome, Edge and Safari, with timers you set by tapping a time in a step. Crouton moves between steps when you point your thumb left or right, and adds SharePlay, an Apple Watch app and kitchen-scale support, which Hedgehog Chef doesn't have.
Is Hedgehog Chef free?
For 14 days. Every new kitchen gets a free trial with everything included and no card needed. After that, it's $5.99/month or $49.99/year for one person (Individual), or $9.99/month or $83.99/year for two people (Family), on every device: unlimited recipes, binders, meal plans, shopping lists and the pantry, the AI planner and grocery prices at your stores (live at Kroger-family stores), with no ads. Your recipes are always yours to export, even if you stop.
Bring your Crouton recipes along.
Export them from Crouton, choose the file in Hedgehog Chef under Recipes › Import › Other apps, and invite the person you cook with, on whatever phone they have. Crouton isn't touched, so you can keep it while you decide.
