Hedgehog Chef vs. Ollie: an honest comparison.

Ollie began as an AI meal planner for families and now leads with a personal assistant you text: it suggests the week's dinners, writes the recipes and the grocery list, and orders the groceries, alongside calendars, school emails and reminders. Hedgehog Chef is a kitchen app built around the recipes you already cook. Here's how the two compare for planning meals, starting with what Ollie does and Hedgehog Chef doesn't.

Compared using Ollie's own website: its home, pricing, FAQ and examples pages, the Ollie for Meals page and that app's terms of use. The Ollie for Meals listings in the App Store and on Google Play, which we read on October 13, 2026, answered “not found” when we checked again, so nothing here relies on them. Last checked November 2, 2026.

Hedgehog Chef is the better fit if you want…

  • Plans built from the recipes your family already loves, saved from any website, a photo of a cookbook page, a social post or another app.
  • An AI planner that proposes the week and an aisle-sorted shopping list for you to review, and changes nothing until you approve.
  • Every recipe the planner proposes, saved or new, is checked against your household's allergies and diets before you see it.
  • A full-screen cook mode with timers and read-aloud, and voice commands in Chrome, Edge and Safari.
  • A pantry with expiry dates and “What can I make?”, so the list skips what you already have.
  • Nutrition calculated from the ingredients, with daily goals on the plan, and your recipes exported whenever you like.

Ollie is the better fit if…

  • You'd rather text than open an app: Ollie works in iMessage or SMS on iPhone and Android, with no app or login to start.
  • You want the recipes written for you: Ollie writes each one for your family's profile and learns your tastes as you go. Hedgehog Chef works best once you've saved some recipes of your own.
  • You want the groceries ordered too: text Ollie to order through Amazon, Instacart or Walmart, and you get a confirmation and an arrival window. Hedgehog Chef sends the list only to your own Kroger cart.
  • You want help with family life beyond the kitchen: calendars, school emails, reminders, to-do lists, bookings and bill pay.
  • You want to start free: 50 messages a month plus 6 a day, with no card or account. Hedgehog Chef has a 14-day free trial, then a subscription.
  • You'd like to log what you eat: Ollie's examples show it logging a meal's calories and macros from a photo. Hedgehog Chef doesn't log food.
  • Your whole household can join one group text with Ollie, on one paid plan. Hedgehog Chef's Family plan is for 2 people.

Why Ollie users switch

What Hedgehog Chef does better than Ollie

Your family's recipes, not only new ones

Ollie writes a recipe when you ask for one, and its examples show those recipes saved to a cookbook in its meal app; we couldn't find a way on its website to bring in recipes from a link, a photo or another app. Hedgehog Chef starts from the recipes you already cook: paste a link, photograph a cookbook page or a handwritten card, or bring a whole library from Paprika, Plan to Eat and others. The planner plans from those, and writes new ones only when yours run short.

A week you can see and change

Ollie's pitch is “no meal plan to manage”: it texts a few meals for the week, and you swipe through ideas on its Explore page. Hedgehog Chef gives you a week board you can drag meals around on, a month view, reusable menus, leftovers and a calendar feed. Ask the planner for “a vegetarian week, nothing spicy, under $100” and it proposes a plan and a shopping list; nothing changes until you approve, and every recipe in it is checked against your household's allergies and diets.

Help at the stove

We couldn't find a step-by-step cooking mode on Ollie's website. Hedgehog Chef's cook mode shows one step at a time with that step's ingredients in big type, sets a timer when you tap a time in the step, reads steps aloud, and takes voice commands in Chrome, Edge and Safari. Any recipe scales by servings, with real fractions, and its nutrition is calculated from the ingredients.

Cook from what you have

Ollie can suggest a dinner from a photo of your fridge. Hedgehog Chef keeps a pantry (fridge, freezer, cupboard and spices, with expiry dates), so the shopping list skips what you already have, “What can I make?” ranks your recipes by what's on hand, and you're reminded before food goes off.

Questions

Ollie vs. Hedgehog Chef: common questions

Is Ollie free?

You can start for free. The Ollie assistant you text is free for 50 messages a month plus 6 a day, with no card or account. Everyday is $25 a month for 150 messages and Always-On is $100 a month for 1,000, and each covers a family group chat. The Ollie for Meals app has a free 1-month trial, then a monthly or yearly plan; its website says the prices are shown when you download the app.

Is the Ollie for Meals app still available?

We can't say for sure. Ollie's website still has its Ollie for Meals page, and its support page links to it, but when we checked on November 2, 2026, the app's App Store and Google Play listings answered “not found”, and the Ollie for Meals page links to neither store. Ollie now leads with its texting assistant, which also plans meals and orders groceries, with no app to download.

Can Ollie plan meals from my own recipes?

We couldn't find a way on Ollie's website to bring in your own recipes from a link, a photo or another app. Ollie writes recipes for your family's profile, and its examples show them saved to a cookbook in its meal app. Hedgehog Chef is built around your own recipes, and its AI planner plans the week from them.

Does Ollie order groceries for you?

Yes. Ollie turns the week's meals into a grocery list organized by aisle, and you can text it to order through Amazon, Instacart or Walmart; it sends a confirmation and an arrival window. Hedgehog Chef can send your list to your own Kroger cart for pickup or delivery, and doesn't order anywhere else.

Can my partner and I both use it?

With Ollie, you bring your partner or family into a group text, and the paid Everyday and Always-On plans each cover the whole family group chat. On Hedgehog Chef's Family plan, 2 people share one kitchen (recipes, plan, pantry and list), each with their own login, and an item checked off on one phone is checked on the other at once.

Is Hedgehog Chef free?

For 14 days. Every new kitchen gets a free trial with everything included and no card needed. After that, it's $5.99/month or $49.99/year for one person (Individual), or $9.99/month or $83.99/year for two people (Family), on every device: unlimited recipes, binders, meal plans, shopping lists and the pantry, the AI planner and grocery prices at your stores (live at Kroger-family stores), with no ads. Your recipes are always yours to export, even if you stop.

Keep the dinners your family liked.

Copy the ingredients and steps of an Ollie recipe (from a text, say) and paste them on the Text tab of Hedgehog Chef's import, save favorites you found online from their links, and ask the planner for next week. Keep Ollie for the calendar and school emails if you like.
