Getting started
- Create your kitchen A kitchen is the shared home for your recipes, meal plans, shopping lists and pantry. Setting one up takes two short steps, and your 14-day free trial starts with it.
- Install the app on iPhone, Android or a computer Hedgehog Chef installs straight from your browser: it opens full screen with its own icon and updates itself. There's no App Store or Google Play version yet.
- A tour of the tabs On a phone the tabs along the bottom are Today, Recipes, Plan, Shop and Pantry. On a computer the sidebar adds the planner, Cook a meal and My kitchen.
Recipes
- Import a recipe from a link Paste a link to almost any recipe page and you get the recipe without the ads: ingredients, steps, times and a photo, with the site credited and linked.
- Import from text or a photo Paste a recipe from a message or note, or photograph a cookbook page, a handwritten card or a screenshot. It's read and written up as a recipe you can check before saving.
- Import from Instagram, TikTok or YouTube Paste the post's link. The recipe written in the caption or description is read, or the recipe page it links to. What's only spoken in a video can't be read.
- Bring your recipes from Paprika or another app Export from your old app, drop the file into Import › Other apps, see what's in it, and import. Photos, notes and categories come along.
- Save recipes from anywhere Set up a quicker way to save from wherever you find recipes: a Shortcut on iPhone, the share sheet on Android, a bookmarklet on a computer, or Claude.
- Edit a recipe Open the recipe, then ⋯ › Edit. Change anything, then Save changes. Everyone in your kitchen sees the update.
- Organize recipes in binders Binders are folders for recipes, shared with everyone in your kitchen. A recipe can be in several, and binders can go three levels deep.
- Scale a recipe and convert units Use the servings control above the ingredients to scale, and the units switch to show US or metric. The recipe itself doesn't change.
- AI photos and the “AI photo” label A recipe saved without a photo can get one made by AI. Every generated photo carries an “AI photo” label, and your own photo always replaces it.
- Export, print or back up your recipes Download every recipe, or just some binders, whenever you like, even if your trial or subscription has ended.
- Cook with step-by-step cook mode Start cooking shows one step at a time, keeps the screen on, and turns times in the steps into timers. Cook a meal times several recipes to finish together.
Meal planning
- Plan a week of meals Put recipes (or anything, like “Pizza night”) on any day's breakfast, lunch, dinner or snack. The plan is shared with everyone in your kitchen.
- Plan with the AI planner Ask the planner what you'd ask a friend who cooks. It reads your recipes, pantry and plan, then proposes meals, a list or a recipe. Nothing changes until you tap to apply it.
- See your meal plan in your calendar Make a private calendar link in Settings › Calendar & display, and your meals show up in Google Calendar, Apple Calendar or any app that subscribes to calendars.
Shopping and pantry
- Add recipes and your plan to the shopping list Add a recipe's ingredients, the whole week's plan, or items you type. The list sorts itself by aisle and can skip what's already in your pantry.
- Share the shopping list with your household Every list belongs to your kitchen, so everyone in it sees the same lists and each other's changes as they happen. There's nothing extra to turn on.
- Grocery prices and sending a list to Kroger Add your stores to see what your list, recipes and plan cost there. At Kroger-family stores you can also send items to your own Kroger cart.
- Use the pantry and “What can I make?” Keep track of what you have and when it expires. What can I make? shows the recipes you can cook now, and the ones missing only an item or two.
Household
- Invite or remove people Anyone in a kitchen can make an invite code. The other person signs up with it, gets their own login, and shares your recipes, plan, lists and pantry.
- How many people a kitchen holds Individual has room for 1 person, Family for 2 people, each with their own login. The free trial has Family's room.
Account and sign-in
- Ways to sign in Sign-in runs on WorkOS's secure pages. You can use an email and password, a one-time code sent to your email, a passkey, Google or Apple.
- Reset or change your password Forgot it? Use Forgot password? on the sign-in page. Know it? Change it in Settings › Account. Either way, your other devices are signed out.
- Sign out your other devices Settings › Account shows how many devices you're signed in on, and signs all the others out at once. The device you're using stays signed in.
- Delete your account Delete your account yourself in Settings › Account. If you're the last person in your kitchen, its recipes and everything else go with it; otherwise the kitchen stays with the others.
Plans and billing
- How the free trial works Every new kitchen starts with a 14-day free trial with everything included, for up to 2 people. No card is needed, and nothing is charged when it ends.
- Individual or Family: plans and prices Both plans include everything in the app. Individual is for one person; Family is for 2 people, each with their own login. There's no free plan after the trial.
- Subscribe to a plan The kitchen's owner subscribes in Settings › Plan & billing, on the web at app.hedgehogchef.com. Payment is handled by Stripe, and the subscription covers everyone in the kitchen.
- Switch plans or billing period The owner who subscribed switches plans in Manage billing (Stripe's billing page). The switch takes effect right away, and your next bill is adjusted for the time left in the current period.
- Cancel your subscription Cancel online any time; you don't need to contact us. Your kitchen keeps full access until the end of the period you've paid for, then pauses. Nothing is deleted.
- Get a refund Ask within 14 days of a charge (the first one or any renewal) and we refund that charge in full. After 14 days, charges aren't refundable, and there are no refunds for partial periods.
- When a payment fails If a payment doesn't go through, Stripe tries again for about 2 weeks and your kitchen keeps full access while it does. Update your card to settle it.
- What a paused kitchen can still do When a trial ends without a subscription, or a subscription ends, the kitchen pauses for everyone in it. Nothing is deleted, and subscribing again brings it all back.
- Use a beta or promotion code Promotion codes, like the code we give beta testers, are entered on Stripe's checkout page when you subscribe. There's no code field inside the app.
- Receipts, invoices and payment details Your invoices, card and billing details are in Manage billing, Stripe's billing page, opened from Settings › Plan & billing by the person who subscribed.
Claude and AI apps
- Connect Claude Add Hedgehog Chef as a custom connector in Claude, and you can save recipes, plan meals and update your list from any Claude chat. It takes about a minute.
- Personal API tokens A personal API token lets a Shortcut, the bookmarklet or your own script read and save recipes in your kitchen. Make one per device or tool, and revoke it any time.
Privacy and data
- Turn AI features on or off One switch in Settings › AI features turns every AI feature off for you, and our servers enforce it. Everyone in a kitchen has their own setting.
- Your data: who sees it, export and deletion Only the people in your kitchen, and apps you connect yourself, can see your recipes. You can download everything, or delete it, whenever you like.
Troubleshooting
- An import didn't work When an import fails, the message says why and offers a next step. Pasting the recipe's text almost always works.
- Changes aren't syncing, or I'm offline Changes show up for everyone in your kitchen within moments. Offline, your shopping list, this week's plan and the recipes saved on the device still open, and shopping changes sync when you're back.
- Turn on notifications, or fix missing ones Turn notifications on for each device in Settings › Notifications, then choose which reminders you want and how.
- Can't sign in, or keep being asked to Make sure you're on app.hedgehogchef.com, sign in from the app you actually use, and check your browser keeps cookies for the site. If that doesn't do it, we'll help.
