Recipe scaler

Paste an ingredient list, say how many servings you need, and every amount is scaled: real fractions, ranges kept as ranges, and units that stay readable. It runs in your browser, so nothing you paste is sent anywhere.

The scaler needs JavaScript, which is off in this browser. The examples and the table of halved and doubled measures below work without it.

How it works

Three steps, no account.

  1. Paste the ingredients

From a recipe site, a note or a cookbook, one ingredient per line. Headings like “For the sauce:” stay headings.

  2. Choose the servings

Say how many the recipe makes and how many you want, or pick a multiplier: half, double, triple or any number.

  3. Copy the result

Every amount is scaled and put in a unit you can measure. Switch to US or metric if you like, then copy the list.

What it handles

Fractions, ranges, cans and the odd lemon.

These lines were scaled by the same code as the tool above, the code that scales recipes in Hedgehog Chef.

  • Fractions as you write them½, 1 1/2, 3/4, 1½ and decimals all work, and results come back as fractions you can measure.
  • Readable units8 tbsp doubled is 1 cup, not 16 tbsp; ¼ cup halved is 2 tbsp. Metric amounts stay metric, and quarts stay quarts as a recipe grows.
  • Ranges stay ranges“2–3 cloves garlic” doubled is “4–6 cloves garlic”.
  • Cans keep their size“1 (14.5-ounce) can” doubled is “2 (14.5-ounce) cans”, not 29 ounces.
  • Amounts inside a line“Juice of 1 lemon” becomes “Juice of 2 lemons”, and “plus 2 tablespoons” scales with the cup before it.
  • Lines without an amount“Salt and pepper to taste” is left as written, and the scaler tells you how many lines it didn't change.

Cheat sheet

Half and double of common measures

Halving ⅓ cup or doubling ¾ cup in your head, mid-recipe, is where mistakes happen. Here are the answers, in units you can measure with US cups and spoons.

The scaler changes amounts, not cooking times, temperatures or pan sizes. A bigger batch may need a bigger pan or more time, so check for doneness.

Every recipe you save in Hedgehog Chef scales to the servings you need, with real fractions, and switches between US and metric. Plan the week, and the shopping list adds up the scaled amounts.
