Best apps · Recipe managers
The 8 best recipe manager apps in 2026.
A recipe manager is where the recipes you actually cook live: the ones from blogs, cookbooks, a grandparent's cards and last week's Instagram. The good ones get recipes in cleanly, keep them organized, and are pleasant to cook from. Here are eight, from household planners to one-time-purchase Apple apps.

How we chose
We make Hedgehog Chef, so it's first on this list: that's our bias, stated up front, and its cons are as honest as everyone else's. The other apps are in the order we'd suggest them for this job. Everything we say about them comes from their own websites, help pages and app-store listings, checked on October 13, 2026 and linked at the end, and each entry says who should pick it instead of ours. We left out store ratings, which change daily.
What we looked at:
- Getting recipes in: links, cookbook photos, pasted text, social posts and other apps' exports
- Organizing and finding them again
- Cooking from them: a clear step-by-step view, timers and scaling
- Platforms, sharing, and whether you can export everything
- Price model: subscription, one-time, or per platform
The apps
Our app
1. Hedgehog Chef
Best for a household's recipes, plan, list and pantry in one place
Hedgehog Chef saves recipes from almost anywhere: a link, a photo of a cookbook page or handwritten card, pasted text, a social post, or a whole library exported from another app. Recipes come in clean, with the source credited and linked, and get a photo if they don't have one. Binders, favorites and search keep them findable.
From there they feed the rest of the kitchen: the planner, an aisle-sorted shared list, the pantry's "What can I make?", and a full-screen cook mode. Hedgehog Chef has no free plan: every kitchen starts with a 14-day free trial with everything included and no card, then Hedgehog Chef Plus ($5.99/month or $49.99/year, on sale soon) covers the whole household.
Pros
- Imports from a link, a photo of a cookbook page or handwritten card, pasted text, or a TikTok, Instagram, YouTube or Pinterest link
- Imports whole libraries from Paprika (photos included), Mela, Crouton, Recipe Keeper, MasterCook, Plan to Eat, Copy Me That and more
- Full-screen cook mode with that step's ingredients, tap-to-start timers, voice commands and read-aloud
- Nutrition calculated from the ingredients with USDA data, with daily goals on the plan
- Up to 8 people, each with their own login, on one subscription
- Export everything, any time, even after a trial or subscription ends
Cons
- New: launched in 2026, so it doesn't have years of track record yet
- No free plan: after the 14-day free trial it's Hedgehog Chef Plus ($5.99/month or $49.99/year, on sale soon)
- No App Store or Google Play app yet: it installs from the browser instead
- Only partly offline: the shopping list, this week's plan and saved recipes open without a connection, the rest needs one
- Platforms
- Any web browser, installable as an app on iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows and Chromebook
- Price
- Hedgehog Chef Plus ($5.99/month or $49.99/year, on sale soon), for the whole household
- Without paying
- A 14-day free trial with everything, no card needed; no free plan after it
2. Paprika

How to choose
Decide first whether you want a recipe box or a kitchen. A recipe box keeps recipes and makes cooking pleasant: Paprika, Mela, Crouton and Recipe Keeper are all excellent at it. A kitchen adds the plan, the shared list and the pantry for everyone at home: that's Hedgehog Chef's focus.
Then check platforms. If anyone at home uses Android or a Windows PC, Apple-only apps (Mela, Crouton, Pestle) are out. If you want a browser on any computer, look at Hedgehog Chef and Copy Me That.
Finally, think about leaving. Recipes are years of work: prefer an app that exports everything in a format other apps can read.
Questions

For a household on mixed devices, Hedgehog Chef: it imports from links, photos, text, social posts and other apps, and runs in any browser. For a single Apple user who wants to pay once, Mela or Paprika.
Is there a recipe app with no subscription?
Yes. Paprika 3, Mela and Recipe Keeper are one-time purchases (per platform). Paprika 4 will add an optional subscription after its beta.
